Bioactivity studies

A2.2.1: STUDIES OF ANTICANCER, ANTIBIOTIC, ANTIFUNGAL, NEMATICIDE, INSECTICIDE, ANTI-AGING, OR ANTIOXIDANT BIOACTIVITY OF ALGAE-DERIVED PRODUCTS AND EVALUATION OF THEIR COMMERCIAL APPLICATION. ISOLATION AND IDENTIFICATION OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS FROM ALGAE NATIVE OF CANARY ISLANDS, MADEIRA, AZORES, AND THIRD AFRICAN COUNTRIES

DESCRIPTION:

MACBIOBLUE intends to evaluate, determine and extract potentially interesting bioactive substances from both beach-cast macroalgae, which naturally accumulate on the foreshore, and microalgae specifically cultivated in the ITC facilities. The potential of these algal biomasses  as anticancer, antibiotic, antifungal, nematicide, insecticide, anti-aging or antioxidant products will be evaluated by FICIC, UAc and Uma, through the realization of chromatographic analysis and the development of extraction and isolation protocols and specific bioassays. The obtained results are expected to reveal the potential of the examined algal biomasses for several industrial applications.

EXPECTED RESULTS

  1. Evaluation of the potential of different macro- and micro-algae biomasses as producers of bioactive compounds of interest for the industry
  2. Determination of the biochemical composition of the selected algae biomasses
  3. Biomass valorization and study of possible industrial applications
  4. Development of strategies for transferring these results to companies
